The short version
Bacteriostatic water is sterile purified water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol added as a preservative. In peptide research it's the standard diluent for dissolving freeze-dried powders, and the benzyl alcohol is what lets a single vial be drawn from repeatedly without contamination risk.
What researchers are looking at
Most research peptides ship lyophilized — freeze-dried to a powder for stability — and have to be dissolved in liquid before any lab work. Bacteriostatic water is the standard choice for that step.
The 0.9% benzyl alcohol is what separates it from plain sterile water. It creates an environment bacteria can't survive in, so the same vial can be accessed multiple times over a 28-day window rather than discarded after a single use. Plain sterile water offers no such protection.
Handling is straightforward: stored at room temperature until opened, refrigerated after first use, and discarded after 28 days or if the solution turns cloudy. A clean syringe is used for each draw.
